Sport fever? Top sports to try in Greater Manchester

If you fancy trying a new sport this summer, Greater Manchester has a huge selection of sports centres to choose from and to help get you started, we’ve put together this handy list of the ones you’ll find closest to our developments.

Calico Grove in Rochdale

Calico Grove is set in an ideal location, just 1.5 miles away from Rochdale town centre. Come rain or shine, you’ll find something to fill some sport-filled days here!

R-Kix performance centre has recently opened nearby and offers a fitness suite, three cricket batting lanes, two 7-a-side and one 5-a-side football pitches, as well as pool, table tennis and darts.

If Formula One is your go-to sport however, you can put your driving skills to the test at the indoor karting track or a short drive will bring you to Tandle Hill Country Park, with cycling trails and a variety of walking tracks.

Hartshead View in Oldham

Hartshead View is positioned on the edge of the Pennine moors, which means sports-lovers will never be short of something to do.

But it’s also just two miles away from Oldham town centre, where you’ll find a leisure centre with gym, fitness classes and an eight lane pool for the swimmers amongst you.

Radclyffe Green in Chadderton

Radclyffe Green is also located just two miles from Oldham and Foxdenton Park is only a short walk away, where you’ll find two tennis courts, two football pitches and a bowling green!

On your doorstep, you’ll also find Radclyffe Athletics Centre, with a six-lane indoor athletics hall and designated area for throws, high jump, long jump and pole vault.

Millbank Lock in Partington

Millbank Lock is located on the picturesque banks of the Manchester Ship Canal, so you can start the day with a stroll, a run or a cycle along the waterways.

But it’s also close to Partington Sports Village, which has a range of world class sporting facilities, including a 3G outdoor football pitch, which was chosen as a training venue for the 2012 Olympics and is currently the training ground for Salford City Football Club.

A huge wellbeing resort is also being built near the Trafford Centre, which is just 4 miles away from the development. Therme Manchester will be complete in 2025 and resembles a tropical resort, perfect to unwind in after exercise.

The Fairways at Brackley Village in Salford

Salford has a huge range of sports complexes and Little Hulton Community Pump Track is a popular spot for bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Like many of our developments, it’s also just a short journey into Manchester city centre where you’ll find even more choice.

Manchester Aquatics Centre deserves a special mention with its Olympic length pools and a diving pool for any wannabe Tom Daleys looking to make a big splash.

Local investment

This is just a snapshot of the amazing sports facilities available in Greater Manchester. But don’t forget, we also invest in the local areas we’re working in and improving the quality of local sports facilities is a big priority for us.

Most recently, we have sponsored Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School football team near our Millbank Lock development and allocated part of a £3.7m investment to Amblecote Playing Fields near The Fairways and the build of a new changing room facility there. Leaving a positive impact in local communities long after our development work has completed, it as important to us as providing much-needed new homes.
